While holding that pressure, apply gentle turning pressure to the key. Do not force it. If it does not go, release, push the wheel the other way and try again. Most bound columns free on the second or third attempt.
Check Park and the pedals
On an automatic, make sure the shifter is fully in Park rather than resting just short of it. Some vehicles also want the brake pedal pressed, and a manual will want the clutch down. These interlocks are easy to overlook in the dark.
If the key still refuses after several honest attempts, stop.
