Read this before you call about a condo. It will save you money.
If you have lost your building entry fob or your parking garage remote, a locksmith cannot help. Those are programmed to the building system and are issued by the property management office, usually for a fee, after they verify you are the resident. The drive from Newmarket — an honest number
We come down Highway 404 or Yonge Street depending on the time of day and the address. Newmarket to Elgin Mills is around 25 kilometres; Newmarket to Highway 7 is closer to 35. In light traffic that is 30 to 40 minutes for north Richmond Hill and 40 to 45 for the south end.
In practice, traffic decides. Southbound 404 between 7 and 9 in the morning, or Yonge anywhere between 16th Avenue and Highway 7 in the late afternoon, will add fifteen to twenty minutes and there is no way around that. If you call during one of those windows we will say so up front. We are not going to quote you the same twenty minutes we quote a Newmarket address — Richmond Hill is a different distance and pretending otherwise would just leave you waiting and annoyed.

Older Richmond Hill: Mill Pond, Crosby and the mature streets
The detached stock either side of Yonge between Major Mackenzie and Elgin Mills is largely 1950s to 1980s, and the hardware tells you so. Original brass deadbolts with worn cylinders where the key has to be jiggled. Strike plates screwed into casing with one-inch screws. Aluminum storm doors with cheap cylinders that seize. Patio sliders with the factory latch and nothing else.
Two upgrades cover most of it and neither is expensive. First, reinforced strike plates with three-inch screws driven into the framing behind the jamb — this is the single highest-value change on that housing stock, because a wood-frame door with a short-screw strike gives up at the jamb rather than at the lock. Second, a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt with a full one-inch throw on the front and rear doors. Together those cost less than a lot of people spend on a camera doorbell and do considerably more.
On sliders, forget the latch. Sliding doors are defeated by lifting the panel out of the track, so anti-lift screws in the upper track plus an auxiliary bar or pin lock is what actually works. Mill Pond century houses are their own case again — original mortise hardware that is usually worth rebuilding rather than replacing.
