The door itself is the other half. Waterfront property carries more locked openings than a normal house. Boat house, shed, bunkie, gate, sometimes a dock box, and often a garage that stores more valuable equipment than the cottage itself. Almost all of them are secured with a hardware-store padlock, and almost all of those padlocks are the wrong choice for a lakeside environment.
An open-shackle brass padlock has two problems. It corrodes internally in damp lakeside air until it seizes, so you will eventually be cutting off your own lock. And the exposed shackle takes about four seconds with bolt cutters, which is not security, it is a suggestion. The correct hardware is a shrouded or closed-shackle padlock with a weather-sealed cylinder, mounted on a hasp with concealed or one-way fasteners so the whole hasp cannot simply be unscrewed. That combination costs perhaps sixty to a hundred and thirty dollars per opening and it actually works.
The other issue on a waterfront lot is that the outbuildings usually sit out of sight of any road and out of sight of the neighbours, especially outside the summer season. Lighting and a camera looking at the boat house does more than heavier hardware in that situation. Camera coverage also settles insurance conversations after a break-in far more quickly.
